Everything from last week was ok as of my Friday appointment with the specialist. The baby measured in the normal range for my 28th week of pregnancy. He is still 1 week behind in size, which has been the case since my 8th week ultrasound…so I bet he waits until I’m 41 weeks pregnant to make his debut! (Plus, if he arrives exactly one week overdue, it will be Thanksgiving Day!) The specialist said he’s in the 33rd percentile for size, so I won’t have a 10 lb. baby in November. He’ll probably be closer to a ‘normal’ size than the typical ‘Rupprecht’ babies, which are upwards of 9 and 10 lbs!!!
The doctor also said I need to keep my water intake up. They measured my amniotic fluid at 11 AFI at the appointment (up from 6 AFI two days before). The increase could be attributable to the machine they used or the fact that I had been drinking like a fish for two days straight! Either way, it was a huge relief. They said I need to be resting with my feet up when I’m at home, and sitting a lot when I’m at work. I have another appointment next Friday to re-check my fluid level to make sure it’s not decreasing.
I guess I didn’t realize that my water intake directly affects the level of my amniotic fluid. Evidently, the water I drink is filtered through my kidneys and ends up in my blood which supplies the baby though the placenta. The baby filters the water through his kidneys and then pees it out…which is my amniotic fluid! I know…gross, but interesting none-the-less! The amniotic fluid turns over completely every 3 days, so the baby isn’t bathing in the same soup for the entire pregnancy.
Thank you for your prayers and messages! The best case scenario (normal fluid levels) was the outcome God blessed us with!
