Eggplant Update

Yay! The baby has been upgraded to an eggplant (finally)! It’s the official start to the 6th month of my pregnancy (25 weeks today)! The baby will grow from 13.6 to 14.8 inches, and 1.5 to 2.2 pounds this month. Our son is starting to form eyes and will soon be blinking. He is also developing a sense of equilibrium and can tell right side up from upside down! At some point soon Phil should be able to put his ear to my tummy and hear the baby’s heartbeat too…no stethoscope needed! I researched on the Mayo Clinic’s website that the baby’s hands are fully formed at 25 weeks and he may enjoy exploring his home more now…which could be why I feel him moving around like crazy these days!!!

I thought 25 weeks was the start of the 3rd trimester (based on an email I got from Fit Pregnancy), but Mayo Clinic’s website assures me the 3rd trimester starts at 28 weeks pregnant (26 weeks after conception). Just as exciting as approaching the 3rd trimester is the fact that after my next doctor appointment in 3 weeks (when I’m 28 weeks along), my appointments will increase in frequency to every two weeks! (Eventually they will be every week… I guess I didn’t realize I was getting to that point yet!)

At my 28 week appointment I will be given the glucose tolerance test, so I will be at the doctor’s for over an hour. Evidently you drink a sugary drink, have your normal appointment with the doctor, then have your blood drawn an hour later to see how your body is processing the sugar from the drink. It’s a test to see if you are at risk for gestational diabetes. It normally wouldn’t concern me too much, but at my last appointment there were trace amounts of sugar in my urine, which can be a preamble to getting gestational diabetes. I do eat a lot of sugar because I eat fruit at every meal and snack on fruit all day. But I assumed that would be healthy sugar and not an issue. Everything delicious is in season right now! We’ll see what happens at that appointment…
