Baby boy Rupprecht is probably close to one pound now. He’s the size of a papaya during the fifth month of pregnancy and will grow from 10.5 inches to 11.8 inches and from 13 oz to over 20 oz this month! He’s growing nipples this week and blood is traveling through his umbilical cord at 4 mph to send him oxygen and nutrients!
The newest development in my pregnancy is acid reflux, which sent me to the emergency room for the first time in my life on Friday (7/16). I was uncomfortable Friday morning and felt like I had indigestion, so I took a few extra strength Tums. But by 10am the pain in my chest was unbearable and my throat felt like it was tight and closing, so I called my OB doctor who recommended an ER visit to make sure it wasn’t something more serious than acid. After 6 hours in the hospital, the doctors checked for heart attack symptoms with an EKG, for blood clots with a CT scan and an ultrasound of the veins in my legs, and when everything looked normal, they sent me home with a prescription for an acid blocker hoping that it was just reflux that caused the symptoms. I was instructed to rest and limit my intake of certain foods (like spicy, acidic, etc). I followed up with my OB doctor today and will now continue to take an OTC acid blocker twice a day for the remainder of my pregnancy. I am told there will be no harm to the baby from the antacid. Hopefully the CT scan in the ER, which has radiation, does not negatively affect our baby boy either. We’ll keep praying for his health and development every night!
